History of World AIDS Day

Since the first World AIDS day in 1988, December 1 has been observed as a day to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS, show support for people living with HIV/AIDS, work towards ending stigma, and promote HIV testing. December 1, 2024, marks the 36th World AIDS Day, with the theme, “Collective Action: Sustain and Accelerate HIV Progress”. This theme reflects the United States government’s ongoing commitment to past and future initiatives, research, and scientific advancements aimed at ensuring all communities are included in the fight against HIV.

Global Statistics

According to UNAIDS, 39.9 million people globally were living with HIV in 2023, and 1.3 million people became newly infected with HIV in the same year. Additionally, 630,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses in 2023. Since the first case of HIV was identified, approximately 88.4 million people have been infected and 42.3 million have died from AIDS-related illnesses.
