December 1 is World AIDS Day.
Globally, 39 million people were living with HIV in 2022, 1.3 million people became newly infected with HIV in 2022, and 630,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses in 2022.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is an infection that attacks the body’s white blood cells, and results in the weakening of the immune system. This makes it easier to get sick with diseases and infections. HIV is spread from the body fluids of an infected person, including breast milk, blood, semen, and vaginal fluids. It can also be spread from a mother to her baby. Contrary to belief, it is not spread by kisses, hugs or sharing food.
HIV can be treated and prevented with antiretroviral therapy (ART). Untreated HIV can progress to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), often after many years. AIDS is the most advanced stage of the disease.
