Finding Prescription Assistance

Taking control of your health may sometimes equate to taking a prescribed medication. The story usually begins with a visit to the doctor’s office where you are told that you are at risk for diabetes, your cholesterol is too high, or your current medication regimen is no longer working. The doctor then writes a prescription for a new medication. The prescription is presented to the technician at the pharmacy counter and you are given an estimated wait time. You approach the counter when called; unaware of the high out of pocket costs that awaits you. Unfortunately, your insurance requires you to meet the predetermined deductible before they take over the bulk of the prescription expenses. As a result, you are left with the difficult decision of forgoing proper treatment for your health.

The cost for prescription drugs continues to skyrocket. In August 2018, the price of four drugs: Ery, Plexion, Doral and Veltassa increased by more than 9%. The price for Veltassa, a potassium binder, rose from approximately $25 to a little over $27. A more dramatic price increase was seen with the lifesaving EpiPen as it has increased more than 480 percent since 2009, leaving patients with a cost of over $500.

Numerous methods exist to assist in cutting down on prescription costs. Many pharmaceutical companies offer free copay assistance cards and trial offers. Unfortunately, patients may not be aware of the avenue to help offset the cost. As a pharmacist with years of experience in retail pharmacy, I understand the burden of prescription costs. It is essential that I help patients navigate this avenue more efficiently. Therefore, I have compiled a free resource for patients to find available prescription assistance on my website. My goal is to ensure patients, like you, reduce monthly prescription costs while receiving optimal benefit from prescription drugs. Visit the Medication Assistance section today!
