The Stop and Go of Exercise
So, you’ve been told by your doctor that you need to make lifestyle changes to improve your health. You schedule an appointment with a nutritionist who helps you develop a meal plan or maybe you meet with a personal trainer to create a workout schedule. You start the process but then you arrive at a roadblock.
Although you might be willing to make changes to improve your health; there are other factors that may be preventing you from doing so. Maybe it’s your finances, maybe it’s the lack of support from your family or maybe there are social pressures that are preventing you from effectively implementing change. Whatever the reason may be, it’s time you look for solutions to help reduce the effects of these factors. It’s time to envision your life after change.
Starting and maintaining a gym membership can cost anywhere from $10 – $30 per month, not including the annual fees. If you’re on a fixed income and can’t afford that extra bill for a membership, you might be wondering what are your options? Maybe you can afford it but there is no one to watch your children. Here are some ways you can still get in a great workout without hurting your pockets.
– A stroll through your neighborhood: When my kids were younger, I used to walk to Providence College (PC) as my kids loved their rock wall. I would set up a game of red light-green light on the sidewalk to teach them about safe crossing while providing myself an opportunity to get in some sprints.
– A walk in the park: The kids can play on the swings while you walk, jog or run around the track. I used to walk around the smaller track that encloses the playground behind Veazie Street elementary school when my kids were younger. Now that they are older, they walk around the larger track with me and we sometimes race each other.
– Stair climbing: In the comfort of your home, this will help you burn fat and tone your body. If you don’t have steps at home, don’t despair as the RI State house steps are great for a weekend workout or two.
– Swimming at the beach or local community pool: engage your entire body without putting excessive strain on any specific muscle groups while cooling off from the summer heat
There are numerous ways for you to incorporate fun activities for the kids with your goal of improving and maintaining your health. Many local parks have “non-traditional” play sets and trails that can help you get in a great workout. A few of my Rhode Island favorites include:
– The tire course and stairs at Camden Ave park in Providence
– Blackstone Boulevard in Providence will provide you with 3 miles of cardio if you decide to walk, jog or run. I have yet to run the entire course lol. However, I tell myself baby steps will lead me there.
– Woonasquatucket River Greenway trail is another gem in Providence where you can get in 3 miles while enjoying the scenery of a waterfall and golf course.
– The historical Cranston Street armory park features a playground and each lap provides 0.5 miles of cardio
– Enjoy the beautiful scenery while getting in a cardio workout at Lincoln Woods State Park
– Tate field in Cranston RI offers a variety of options with a larger and smaller track as well as stairs
As with any exercise routine, always consult with your healthcare provider prior to starting any rigorous activity. Ensure that you maintain safety and proper form while aiming for about 25 – 30 minutes of activity. Remember, don’t be afraid to start small and be confident that you will be making your way to a healthier and happier you!
